Inclusive education policy and classroom practice

Seva in Action, India

Seva-in-Action (SiA) was founded in 1985 to help families of rural children with disabilities find within their communities solutions to problems involving rehabilitation and education.

SiA works primarily in the field of inclusive education and has consultative status with the Indian Ministry of Human Resource Development, to develop and support inclusive educational practices for disabled children in India. SiA is also the State Nodal Agency Centre for Karnataka for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

SiA has provided inclusive and special needs education consultants on DDP projects in India (‘Education and Livelihood Opportunities’) and Ethiopia where they supported the ‘Education and Livelihoods for Women and Girls’ and ‘From Childhood to Livelihood’ programmes. They have conducted hands-on special needs training for primary school teachers in Tulla sub city, and participated in the annual meeting of the Hawassa Inclusive Education Forum at the Hawassa teacher training college, where they hosted a session comparing the Indian experience of inclusive education with that in Ethiopia so as to transfer lessons from India.
